“Colonial Era Research” – September 08, 2021 – Free Genealogy Program

This is the first of two presentations on the colonial era which is basically 1607 to 1789. In this presentation, the thirteen colonies, plus the forgotten colonies, will be reviewed regarding the types of colonies, their founders, why they were founded, their boundary changes, and various government styles. Each colony had unique requirements for citizenship, voting, inheritance, and the right to own property. Guidance will be given on how to research and verify ancestors in the changing geographics of the colonies.

Curt Sylvester has researched extensively in the American colonies. He has verified over 130 immigrant great-grandparents that arrived in the colonies prior to 1789. The earliest ancestor arrived in 1618. Prior to the Revolution, Curt had several ancestors who were in the colonial militias and leaders in colonial government including one who was an acting governor of the colony of Virginia. Curt has documented nineteen great-grandparents who were veterans of the Revolutionary War and five who were veterans of the War of 1812. He is a member of the Indiana Territorial Guard authenticating eight great-grandparents that lived in Indiana before it became a state in 1816. He has eleven great-grandparents that qualified for First Families of Clark County, Indiana and twenty-six great-grandparents that qualified for First Families of Monroe County, Indiana. Curt is a board member of the Indiana Genealogical Society and is a Past-President of the Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana. He holds a doctorate degree from Drew University.
