“A Genealogist’s Holiday: The 1950 Census” – September 14, 2022 – Free Genealogy Program

“Census Release Day” is an informal but long-anticipated holiday for genealogist as we get to dive into a treasure trove of data. The Census was released on April 1st of this year, and it has been indexed. What are we missing? How can we find more about our ancestors? What is the best way to navigate the information? This presentation will answer these questions and more.

Allison DePrey Singleton, MA, MLS, is a senior librarian in the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In that capacity she provides research consultations, serves on the Center’s programming team, and leads its family history webinars and educational initiatives. Allison presented at the 2020 RootsTech Conference, the 2018 Indiana Genealogical Society Conference, and was slated to speak at the 2020 National Genealogical Society’s Librarians’ Day. As a part of her position at The Genealogy Center, Allison was a Co-Chair of the 2018 Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference. She is also a NE Regional Co-Coordinator for the National History Day in Indiana. In addition to her employment activities, Allison is also on the board of the Indiana Genealogical Society and Indiana German Heritage Society.

“Don’t Forget the Ladies – A Genealogists Guide to Women & the Law” – May 11, 2022 – Free Genealogy Program

In early America, women were all too often the people who just weren’t there: not in the records, not in the censuses, not on juries, not in the voting booth. The common law relegated women to “protected” – second-class – status, and understanding how they were treated under the law provides clues to finding their identities today.

The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell is a genealogist with a law degree who provides expert guidance through the murky territory where law and family history intersect. An internationally-known lecturer and award-winning writer, she holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist® and Certified Genealogical Lecturer℠ from the Board for Certification of Genealogists®. Her blog is at https://www.legalgenealogist.com.

“Finding Your Germanic Ancestral Place of Origin” – February 9, 2022 – Free Genealogy Program

To make progress in our German family history, we often want to keep going and “jump the pond” back to the old country. Yet, there is no central record repository for the former Germanic states, and many of the records we need were kept at the parish and local level. Thus, our first step is to find our ancestors’ local place of origin. We will look at a variety of sources in the U. S. and abroad that can guide you to your ancestor’s home place of origin. Examples and case studies will highlight how to approach and interpret these records when you find them.

Gail Shaffer Blankenau is on a mission to help fellow genealogists to succeed with their family history. She shares her research and advice in a wide variety of publications and speaks on genealogy at local, state, and national conferences, as well as at the Legacy Family Tree webinars online. She specializes in German genealogy, the Midwest and West, land records, homesteading, 19th-century photographs and lineage research. She was a consulting researcher for William G. Thomas III’s award-winning book A Question of Freedom: The Families Who Challenged Slavery from the Nation’s Founding to the Civil War (2020 Yale University Press), and serves as the genealogist for the Nickerson Family Association (Cape Cod), and the Germanic Genealogy Society board. She recently earned a master’s degree in history with an award-winning thesis “Journey to Freedom from Nebraska Territory.”
