“Using Technology in DNA Research” – Saturday, February 15, 2020

“Family Tree Maker” – Saturday, January 18, 2020

Learn what’s new with Family Tree Maker. Everyone is encouraged to bring your laptop for this session. Have FTM 2017 or 2019 loaded onto your laptop computer. Please have your laptop completely charged as there will be limited electrical outlets.

“Great Discoveries and Unique Ancestors” January 9, 2019 presented by ACGSI Members – Free Educational Genealogy Program

“Where to Search For Documentation” December 12, 2018 presented by Marge Graham – Free Educational Genealogy Program

This presentation will discuss where to search to find documents including birth and death certificates, records of marriage, military, pensions, wills, probate and other legal and public records. This meeting will be in the Discovery Center in The Genealogy Center.

Marge Graham, an ACGSI member, is a former Certified Genealogist with over 35 years of genealogical research experience. She is the Allen County Genealogist for the Indiana Genealogical Society.

“Breaking Through the Brick Wall: 14 Steps for Re-thinking and Solving Genealogical Problems” November 14, 2018 presented by John Beatty – Free Educational Genealogy Program

This presentation looks intensely at a single case study in the presenter’s own research—an ancestor who for many years was a brick wall. 14 problem-solving tools/methodologies are identified that could apply to anyone’s brick walls.

John Beatty, staff member of The Genealogy Center since 2002, is a Certified Genealogist with a Master’s degree in History and Library Science from the University of Michigan.

“Non-population Census Schedules” October 10, 2018 presented by Randi Richardson – Free Educational Genealogy Program

This presentation will review seven non-population census schedules. This information was collected at the same time as the population census, but the information is often overlooked in genealogical research.

Randi Richardson has been doing genealogy for about twenty-five years with a concentration in Monroe County, Indiana. She has written many articles for genealogical venues and websites. She serves as the South-Central District Director for the Indiana Genealogical Society.

“The Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center: Update on Collections and Access” September 12, 2018 presented by Curt B. Witcher – Free Educational Genealogy Program

Update on new collections available in The Genealogy Center as well as tips on how to access materials in FamilySearch’s Family History Books, the Internet Archive and other online repositories.

Curt B. Witcher, Senior Manager of Special Collections at the Allen County Public Library, manages the widely acclaimed Genealogy Center as well as the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection of Abraham Lincoln related research materials. He is in his thirty-ninth year with ACPL. In 2016, the Indiana Lieutenant Governor presented Curt with the Hoosier Hospitality Award and the Dallas Genealogical Society awarded him the Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck Distinguished Service Award.

“Finding A European Village of Origin” May 9, 2018 presented by James Beidler – Free Educational Genealogy Program

Researching German Ancestors will be the topic of this evening presentation and two earlier in the afternoon (see brochure below for information). This presentation will be a case study of Johannes Dinius, a 1765 immigrant to Pennsylvania, is used to show how scraps of evidence properly deployed can lead to the discovery of a European hometown.

James Beidler is a free-lance writer, lecturer and researcher specializing in German genealogy. Based in Pennsylvania, he is a sought after speaker nationally and has presented at many national genealogical conferences.

“Using GIS to Find Ancestral Homes” April 11, 2018 presented by John Schreiber – Free Educational Genealogy Program

Using Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) to find location of and display maps of ancestor’s residences and farms. Learn how to take information from land deeds and use it to create image maps. John provided links to the Rectangular Survey System found on our Land Records page on Allen INGenWeb.

John Schreiber is a retired engineer who uses his training and experience to apply the latest technology to locate and present genealogical information. For over thirty years, John has been obsessed with using this mapping technology.
