“French Migration to Allen County, Indiana with a Special Nod to Alsace”” – November 10,, 2021 – Free Genealogy Program

The area now known as Allen County has a long history of French explorers, traders, and settlers. Many of the county’s prominent families share in this French heritage. This presentation will share research into this segment of our county’s heritage.

Martine Copeland, born and educated in France, came to the United States as a guest lecturer at the University of South Carolina. She later moved to New York City where she worked on Wall Street and as a real estate broker. Her research in Allen County was sparked by a surname found on a stained-glass window at Saint Louis Besancon Catholic Church. Martine has compiled a database of more than 30,000 people who immigrated from France to Allen County. This list may be viewed at: https://www.genealogycenter.info/search_allencountyfrenchcomp.php

“Colonial Era Research” – October 13, 2021 – Free Genealogy Program

https://www.acgsi.org/meetings.php

This is the second of two presentations on the colonial era which is basically 1607 to 1789. This presentation explores the people who lived in the colonies including the Native Americans, English immigrants, and non-English immigrants. Analysis will be provided of immigrant’s home country and why the immigrants came to colony of arrival. We will explore the life situations and how our ancestors adjusted into the various social classes of the colonies. Guidance will be given on researching ancestors in the colonies using DNA, ship’s logs, court records, tax records, land records, and clues provided by family names and religion.
Curt Sylvester has researched extensively in the American colonies. He has verified over 130 immigrant great-grandparents that arrived in the colonies prior to 1789. The earliest ancestor arrived in 1618. Prior to the Revolution, Curt had several ancestors who were in the colonial militias and leaders in colonial government including one who was an acting governor of the colony of Virginia. Curt has documented nineteen great-grandparents who were veterans of the Revolutionary War and five who were veterans of the War of 1812. He is a member of the Indiana Territorial Guard authenticating eight great-grandparents that lived in Indiana before it became a state in 1816. He has eleven great-grandparents that qualified for First Families of Clark County, Indiana and twenty-six great-grandparents that qualified for First Families of Monroe County, Indiana. Curt is a board member of the Indiana Genealogical Society and is a Past-President of the Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana. He holds a doctorate degree from Drew University.

“Colonial Era Research” – September 08, 2021 – Free Genealogy Program

This is the first of two presentations on the colonial era which is basically 1607 to 1789. In this presentation, the thirteen colonies, plus the forgotten colonies, will be reviewed regarding the types of colonies, their founders, why they were founded, their boundary changes, and various government styles. Each colony had unique requirements for citizenship, voting, inheritance, and the right to own property. Guidance will be given on how to research and verify ancestors in the changing geographics of the colonies.
